Hi! So, a few changes.

With the way the mod team is doing, we have to change a few things, by which I mostly mean scaling down. So no more monthly challenges, and no more tweets or discord announcements (past one for this of course).
Below is a draft dump of what we had planned so far. The exchange thing and the custom banner thing obviously don’t apply anymore. Feel free to count the rest as official or not, however you want.

Next year is a bit of a question mark, tbh. I know I (Anna) am stepping dow, and either someone jumps in as main mod and takes over, or we leave it be. If you’d be interested please let us know! We still have all the planning notes and everything, if that can help. Otherwise, this has been a lot of fun. Thanks for playing with us!

Love,
Anna

Ask the cover artist: dream collab
Describe the hypothetical collaborative cover art(/art/design/…) project of your dreams. Could be an idea you need someone with a specific skillset to implement, could be a fun experiment that relies on having two people, could be a chill and easy project to make for a chill and easy experience!

Personally, I’ve been trying to learn how to use scribus (open source software to format documents for publishing), except I’m missing an actual project to figure it out on, so a collab where I’d create something (zine, magazine cover, leaflet, …) based on the content of my collaborator would be awesome.

Art history: food art
Is food art? Well, art or design, it’s for sure pretty: latte art, cute bento, cake decoration (and one more), food photography, seasonal things like pumpkin carving and gingerbread houses, … and from NBC’s Hannibal to parenting blogs, from eat art to Arcimboldo, people seem to agree!

March! Northern hemisphere friends, we’re getting really close to the end of that seasonal depression, hang tight.

Ask the cover artist: tools of the trade
Tell us about a software, online tool or resource that you use! What’s so great about it? Show us some examples?

I’ll start: Inkscape. It’s a vectorial image editor, so it’s very easy to play around with shapes, colors, fonts and composition. It’s not the best for complexe texture, and it’s hard to get used to unless you’re already used to similar tools (open source software like like Glimpse/G*MP, or vectorial ones like Adobe Illustrator or even Photoshop now), but since most of the time I’m thinking more in terms of design than in terms of art, it’s perfect. All of these covers except the first, the second and the fifth were done with inkscape.

Art history: glass work
Glass work is a fascinating process with many practical and artistic uses: stained glass, vitreous enamel, grandma’s decorative paperweight, …
Maybe don’t try to do this at home, but if you do, definitely show us the results!

Welcome to the first monthly challenge of this Cover Artist Bingo 2021!
Btw, a few useful links: signups, rules/FAQ, help wanted.

How this works:
There will be two optional challenges each month: ask the artist and art history.
- For ask the artist, you’ll have to talk about your experience, share some resources, and generally discuss cover art. You can answer directly on this post, or answer somewhere else and link to it here.
- For art history, you’ll have to fill a specific prompt, similar to the monthly themes of Podfic Bingo. You can incorporate it with other squares, or create a work just for it. Do post it in this comm, we'd love to see it!
Doing one will give you a cheat (so two if you do both). Cheats don’t expire until the end of the bingo. A cheat can be used to swap two squares on your card, replace a square by a prompt from the prompt list or fill a square (or actually, anything, if you decide to make your own rules.) For more information, see the rules/FAQ post linked above.

Ask the cover artist: goals goals goals
What are your goals for this challenge? Are you customizing your rules playbook or going by ours? Is there anything in particular you’d like to learn or accomplish?

I (Anna) am mostly trying to take it easy this round, but I’m looking forward to playing around with the graphics for the challenge, and that includes the prize banners at the end of the bingo! Here are a few potential achievements that would for sure win you a personalized banner*:
- blackout with one (1) work
- blackout with cheats only (might need some adjustments to the standard rules)
- all the challenges, not even one square
*(Everyone will get a personalized banner anyway, but like, extra sparkles on yours maybe? Idk.)

Art history: geometric art
Geometric art is created using geometric elements, shapes… Geometric art is inspired from geometry.
However, it’s also a phase of Greek art that flourished circa 900–700 BCE, and in general, geometric abstraction can be found in many a continent and art period. Here are some more practical resources: 10 geometric art explorations for teachers, a wikihow article, a video lesson for art students, and a design lesson.

Once again, feel free to interpret this prompt very broadly: make something that could qualify as geometric art, integrate or reinterpret an existing piece of geometric art into a work, or just take inspiration from your research somehow!

This is your general “I’d like some help” post! Mostly for asking the other participants: if you’d like the mods to clarify some rule or explain their reasoning for a prompt, you might want to go to the replies to the prompt list or the rules/faq instead.
But if you have a prompt you’d like ideas for, if you’d like a co-artist or a beta or a cheerleader, if you’re looking for resources on something, if you have podfics that need covers or covers that could use podfics, or if you just have a question about cover art, you’ve come to the right place!

We won’t start issuing cards until the 1st of February, but here’s the prompt list!! Sign-ups are open! Here are the rules/FAQ, the prompt list is below, if you have any questions either drop them in a comment or see the "I have a question, a suggestion, a problem or a concern, how do I get in touch?" section of the FAQ.

Prompt list )

Sign-ups
To sign up, reply to this post with either a request for a standard bingo card or your own custom-made card. Sign-ups will open on Feb 01, when we’ll start issuing cards, and stay open for the duration of this bingo. You can absolutely re-sign-up if you’d like one more card, or edit your sign-up later on.

If you’d prefer to make your own card, here’s the bingo card generator we use, and here’s the full list of prompts that you can copy paste into the generator. If you choose to go that route, feel free to add any homemade squares you want, or make a smaller card, or otherwise customize it.

Icon Accessories:
Inspired by team Red Out Loud’s little red hats, here are some accessories you can add to your profile pics! This is in no way mandatory, and if you’d like help with it, please don’t hesitate to ask in a reply to this post.
All the files, including the raw svg, can be found here.

In the whole, not much has changed from last year. We’ve tweaked the prompt list and the challenges, added even more words to the rules, backtracked and added even MORE words with a summarized version or two, ... So here’s the schedule once again, that first summary that’ll give you the gist, then a summary of the changes from last year for returning participants, then the full version.
The rules are subject to change, based on feedback, up until signups open. If they do, we’ll mention it in the signup post. The prompt list will go up closer to signups. Here's the prompt list (/signups post)!

Schedule:
Schedule: 01 Feb - 01 Nov,
Signups/posting: all throughout the round,
Monthly challenges: a post at the start of each month, open until the end of the month.

TL;DR )

Changes from last year )

Rules/FAQ:
What’s a bingo? )

How do I fill a square and is there a posting template? )

How many squares can I fill with one work? )

Does that mean I have to record and post one podfic per cover? )

Something ‘cover-related’? And btw, why cover artIST bingo? )

’Somehow’ fits the prompt? How creative can I get? )

But I have no idea what to do with that? Is that a url?? )

I have an old cover that fits one of my squares, can I use it? )

How do I sign-up? Can I opt out of such and such prompt? )

I've finished my card, can I have/make another one? )

Are there prizes? )

Are there cheats and challenges like for the podfic bingo? )

What do cheats do? )

I have a question, a suggestion, a problem or a concern, how do I get in touch? )

What if it’s about someone’s behaviour? And btw, what are the values of this challenge? )

What are you doing to address your own ingrained prejudices? What can I do? )

We're now in September, and that means this year's cover artist bingo is over. Congrats to everyone! It was amazing to see all the works of art you created, and it definitely inspired me for future covers.
This bingo will hopefully be back next year, though the timeframe and details aren't set yet. On that note, we'd be grateful for any feedback or suggestions you might have. You can either leave them at this post or reach out to one of the mods (Growlery and I) on whichever platform of your choice. A few areas that need second opinions: the challenges, the prompts list, the schedule.
This dreamwidth community is year-round, so feel free to keep posting your covers and resources here! That includes covers you did or were planning to do for this bingo before you ran out of time. You could even, if you wanted to, organize another challenge or two...

Since July's challenge was late, here’s something a little different for the last week of this bingo:
Tell us how it went! Did you achieve your goals? What did you learn? What was fun, what wasn’t? How’s your card looking? And most importantly, what would you suggest for next year’s round?

For the feedback part, you can also pm/email/discuss on twitter or discord/whatever else, whatever is more comfortable for you.
If you have no idea what to say, here are a few points that might need changing before next year:
- schedule (timing, length)
- challenges (why they flopped, whether to keep or to do away with, if the first what to change)
- prompts (any specific fun or unfun ones, balance between the categories, new ideas)

Once you’ve done that, you’ll have earned a special cheat that you can use to fill one (any) of your squares.

[personal profile] annapods
The July challenge is still up and will be for a while, so our final challenge has been relegated to the last week of August. Which wouldn't be fair if it was only worth a swap cheat, so it'll be worth a special cheat: it'll enable you to choose one (any) square of your card and call it filled!
(Technically, you could totally use the July challenge to fill squares, since its about creating meta about cover art, but that wouldn't be /any/ square, so)

Good luck with your cover arting!

[personal profile] annapods

It's nearly the end of the month (sorry!) so this challenge will stay open until the 24th of August. Remind you, this bingo closes on the 31st!
The same rules apply as previous challenges: one cheat, to change one of your bingo squares.

Behind the scene:
Document your cover arting process and share a link here! Can be in writing like Lavenderfrost’s Behind the cover series (https://archiveofourown.org/works/6156175) or Kess’s Podfic Journal (https://archiveofourown.org/works/21543361) or Yue_ix and Annapods’ notes for a collaborative cover (https://archiveofourown.org/works/16216475), in a video like Justaphage’s cover art process video (https://archive.org/details/MeltingFromMyWingsProcess) or Annapods’ (https://archiveofourown.org/works/21791944), or DrFumblesMcStupid’s tutorial (https://archiveofourown.org/works/19801219), or you could use one of those 30 questions memes on twitter, or ...

Covers:
There is already a cover art request post in this comm (https://poddersundercover.dreamwidth.org/779.html) and you can still use the other one of course. Additionally, you might want to use/check out the “podfic cover art welcome” and “cover art welcome” tags on ao3. But you can only get your monthly bingo cheat by using this post here.

Things you might want to mention: fandom, ships/characters, pairing, tropes, content notes, length, if the audio is available and where/how, visual elements and possible cover ideas, time restrictions if any, …

Words:
Alternatively, do you have a cover in need of some words to tell its story? Can be a cover for a specific fic without a podfic, a cover that sets up a as-of-yet unexplored premise, a cover for a general setting or tropes that could apply to any fandom, …

You might want to mention whether you’d edit the text of the cover yourself, or pass on the raw file, and if so in which format.

Collabs:
Do you have an idea for a cover you’d like to make a collab in some way or another? Or would you like to announce that you'd like to collab, and the project can be decided together? Same post!

Pimp one of your covers!
Or someone else’s. Ideally both. (Yes this is totally an excuse for a love fest.)

Resources post:
Have a favorite stock pictures website, or a beloved image editing software, or a tutorial on fonts, or any other resource to share? We want it!

Monthly challenge:
Just with like the Help wanted post for March, if you reply to this post in the month of April you'll get a cheat you can use (whenever but only once) to change one of your squares to anything else you want.
This post will stay open after the month is up, and please do keep using it! It just won’t give you a cheat anymore.

Monthly challenges:
The way challenges work for this bingo is a bit different from how it works for the podfic bingo. Every month, there’ll be a post for you to reply to in some way. It won’t be about creating something (though of course some of it will likely lead to that) but about interacting with other participants.
Doing so will give you one cheat you can use to change one of your squares to anything else you want. You can also keep your cheats for a later date. The mods won’t keep track of who did what, we trust you.
The posts will stay open after the month is up, they’re here for you to use all throughout the bingo and even after. They just won’t give you a cheat anymore.
Here's the post for this month:
