Description: the title "In the Beginning, There Was Probably a Dick" handwritten in black pen on a white background, with the words "written by Lumeleo" and "Read by BabelGhoti" in white on a black background above and below it.

Squares: Hand drawn, Words only.

Podfic: [podfic] In the Beginning, There Was Probably a Dick

Notes:
So, I can't draw (clearly), but I found the idea of a hand drawn cover quite appealing. And since this fic is a creation myth, handwriting the title seemed appropriate.

And that's another bingo for me!

Description: A blue-green screenshot of the living room from the Billie Eilish video "bad guy" centered in the middle of a white background. A cartoon goose has taken Eilish's place and honks in the foreground. The title of the podfic and the author's name are at the bottom in a lowercase font.

Podfic: geese goose (ok, it's filk)
Fandom: Untitled Goose Game
Square: Joyful
Notes: It's basically just a screencap of from the music video for "bad guy," but with Billie Eilish removed and a horrible honking Goose in her place. I think it's joyful, or at least it made me laugh while I was putting it together.
Editing program: Pixlr mobile app and the Photo Layers app.

Description: a monochrome photograph of a dimly lit, slightly messy bed with two pillows is centered in the middle of a black background. The title of the podfic is written at the top of the photograph in a handwriting font, the author and podficcer are listed at the bottom in a sans serif font.

Podfic: Restrain Your Voice From Crying
Fandom: The Magnus Archives
Square: Done in 15 Minutes
Notes: I think finding the stock photo took the longest amount of time for this one. I had a basic idea of what I wanted when I started out and luckily it wasn't too hard to execute.

Description: two sepia photographs are centered in the middle of a black background. The top image contains a hand of cards, shown to the camera, with the other player's cards on the table in the background. The second image contains a chess board, set up to start a new game. The title of the fic is located between the two images, the author and podficcer are listed in the bottom right of the cover, in a different font.

Podfic: games
Fandom: The Magnus Archives
Square: Monochrome
Notes: This was an unsuccessful attempt at self-portrait (I ended up having to crop most of my hand out of the image of holding playing cards 😭). But yeah, I desaturated everything and put a sepia filter on it so it's monochrome.
Editing program: Pixlr mobile app and Canva mobile app.

Description: The older version of the cover art is on the left, the final version is on the right. Both images are very similar aside from color and font choices. The cover contains a photograph of a woman reaching into a bag with sparks coming out of it, and the image takes up most of the cover. The title of the podfic is shown in the upper right of the image, the author and podficcer are shown in the bottom left. The older cover used a thin sans serif font for the title, and a lowercase computery font for the author/podficcer names. The final cover used an all- caps typewriter font throughout.

Podfic: Catalysis
Fandom: Warehouse 13
Square: Cover First, New Take on an Old Cover
Notes: lmao, ok, I started making this cover over a year ago and only got around to recording the podfic last month. I thought I'd finished the cover last year, but I ended up hating my font choice so I went with a new one. The cover itself took a couple hours to make because I wanted several specific elements in the photo: a very plain bracelet, a woman's hand, and then the hand needed to touch something that was plot-relevant. The stock photo I used here is a woman reaching into a chalk bag (for rock-climbing?). I had to desaturate the image to hide the tie dye shirt and the chalk on her hands. Then I layered on some sparks coming out of the bag, and made the whole thing purple, both of which are tied to the plot. For the final version of the cover, I added back in some color to break up the monotone of the image. I'm kinda happy with how it turned out in the end.
Editing program: Pixlr mobile app and the Photo Layers app. New version was modified in Pixlr X for desktop.

Description: This cover is a modified version of Miike Snow's album art for "iii." A highly stylized jackalope, patterned with colorful circles and blocks of color, sits in the center of a black background. The jackalope is sitting in front of a microphone wearing headphones. The title and author's name are listed at the top, in the center of the image, in an all-caps font.

Podfic: Genghis Pod (another filk)
Fandom: Podfic Fandom
Square: Free Space
Notes: I took the existing album art for Miike Snow's album "iii," removed the title and his name, and added headphones and a mic. I really like how this one came out.
Miike Snow's album art: via Wikipedia.
Editing program: Pixlr mobile app and the Photo Layers app.

Description: The background of this cover is a photograph of waves in the ocean. There is a slightly transparent dark blue box in the upper left corner with the title of the podfic in all-caps. In the upper right corner, there is an "explicit" rating sticker. The author and podficcer are listed in all-caps in the bottom right (same font as the title), on top of a white text box that looks like it was painted on to the image.

Podfic: Darling, It's Better
Fandom: The Magnus Archives
Square: Reuse/Recycle
Notes: "Reuse" in the sense that I've seen other podficcers use this specific Canva template for cover art and I thought it was cool, so I also used it, and changed very little of the Canva-suggested format.

Description: A fragment of Sappho's poetry is placed vertically on top of a pale tan background. The title of the podfic is printed in black, in all-caps, sans serif font in the upper right. The author's name follows directly below it in red, and the podficcers names are printed below that in black font.

Podfic: Crawling Beast (link to fic, the podfic has not yet been posted)
Fandom: Good Omens/Historical RPF
Square: Minimalist, From Scratch
Notes: This is a Crowley/Sappho podfic so basically what I did was search for covers of Sappho anthologies. I found this one which had really great composition and I thought would work really well. Instead of just taking the book cover and putting my own text on it, I recreated it from scratch. I found an image of one of Sappho's fragments and made it transparent, added it to a square off-white background, and then added the text to emulate the original cover.
The book cover: via Abe books.
Editing program: Pixlr mobile app and the Photo Layers app.

Description: The background of the cover is a photograph of a single metal chair with a fabric cushion, with a bed in the background. The title of the fic is printed inside a slightly transparent black text box at the bottom of the image, in a serif font. The author and podficcer's names are printed below it in a smaller, sans serif font.

Podfic: Tell Me With Your Eyes
Fandom: The Magnus Archives
Square: Chiaroscuro
Notes: The lighting is uneven, it's a mostly dark, dimly-lit scene with pops of brightness for contrast that draw the viewer's eye to the chair and the bed, where most of the fic is taking place.

Yusuf’s mind is not unlike a sudden abyss. “That we might be . . .”

Notes: I used the colour of the year 2020 and tried to evoke the story's quiet, reflective mood with the font choice and colour. I tend to gravitate towards the same colour schemes a lot when left to my own devices (light grey background for everyone!) so this was really cool!

Summary: Men and cities are made of clay and turn to dust.

Notes: Thanks to Chantress for volunteering this voiceteam project for my cover needs! I found this depiction of (probably) Gilgamesh & Enkidu, cleaned it up so they would be the sole focus, replicated a smooth background by layering textures and effects, and then tried to figure out a way to make text resemble the "sculpted" effect. This worked really well until I realized that I totally forgot the "In" from the title, and by that stage I couldn't reverse or remember exactly what I'd done, so I had to frankenstein the word from the other letters already in the text >.> But I'm pretty pleased with the result!

The July challenge is still up and will be for a while, so our final challenge has been relegated to the last week of August. Which wouldn't be fair if it was only worth a swap cheat, so it'll be worth a special cheat: it'll enable you to choose one (any) square of your card and call it filled!
(Technically, you could totally use the July challenge to fill squares, since its about creating meta about cover art, but that wouldn't be /any/ square, so)

Good luck with your cover arting!
